In 1999, Michael Yates decided to officially make a wine off the family vineyard. Mike watched his father and grandfather, Alden and Perry Yates, make wine from the property his whole life to share with family and friends. Following their passion for wine, Mike created our brand to share these grapes with the general population.
Almost 25 years later, Mike has both his daughters involved with him in his wine project. Michael Yates is the winemaker and his daughter, Whitney assists him along with helping in sales, Mary, the youngest daughter, is in charge of running the business side.
The Yates Family Vineyard is located at the southern end of the Napa Valley in the Mount Veeder Appellation. The vineyard site has been continuously farmed since the late 1800’s. The Yates family purchased the ranch in 1949. They have been supplying local wineries with their much sought after mountain fruit and making wine for family and friends from the very beginning.
The 35 acres of steep, hillside vineyards soar to over 1,200 feet elevation. The vineyards were replanted by the Yates’ family in the early 1980s to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Each block or section, with its own particular sun exposure, microclimate and volcanic soils, imparts unique characteristics to the grapes. Hand-farmed terraces, small yields, and a near-perfect combination of climate, rock, and soils contribute to the exceptional quality of the grapes.
